Coins Earflap Hat

Skills Required/Techniques Used

Knit, cast-on, decreasing, increasing, working in the round, colorwork, and i-cords.

Yarn

CYC #4 Medium.

Sample shown knit in: Cascade 220 Superwash Merino (100% Superwash Merino Wool), 220 yds/201 m, 3.53 oz/100 g, 1 skein each: 

  MC - 27 Charcoal Heather,

  CC1 - 28 Black, and 

  CC2 - 25 White.

Needles

US 7/4.5 mm - one 16"/40 cm circular needle, and DPNs.

US 5/3.75 mm - one long circular needle or DPNs.

Or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions

Stitch markers (M); tapestry needle.

Gauge

20 sts and 28 rnds = 4"/10 cm square in Stockinette stitch using US 7/4.5 mm needles worked in the round.

Adult Large.

Finished Measurements

Hat circumference, unstretched: 21.5"/54.6 cm

To fit head circumference: 20-24"/51-61 cm

Hat circumference should be approximately 0 to 10% smaller than your actual head circumference.

Stitches

M1R - Make One Right: With your left needle pick up the strand of yarn between your needles from back to front. Knit this lifted strand.

M1L - Make One Left: With your left needle pick up the strand of yarn between your needles from front to back. Knit this lifted strand through the back loop.

CDD - Central Double Decrease: Slip next two stitches together as if to knit, knit the next stitch, pass the two slipped stitches over the knit stitch.

P3tog - Purl Three Together: Stick your right needle through the first three stitches on the left needle as to purl (from right to left). Wrap your yarn counterclockwise around the right needle and pull the loop back through all three stitches.

Note

The earflaps are worked separately and then the hat is joined together in the round. The edge is done with an applied i-cord. And two i-cords are attached to the earflaps.

DIRECTIONS

Earflaps

Make 2.

Using Long Tail cast-on and MC, CO 9 sts.

Row 1 - RS: Knit across.

Row 2 - WS: Purl across.

Row 3: K1, M1R, Knit to last st, M1L, K1.

Row 4. Purl across.

Repeat Rows 3-4 eight more times. (27 sts)

Work even until earflap measures 3.5"/9 cm from the cast on edge. Cut yarn and put aside on stitch holder or spare DPN.

Joining 

With circular needle and MC, CO 34 sts.

Knit across the first earflap. 

Using backwards loop, CO 10 sts, PM BOR, CO 10 sts.

Knit across the second earflap.

Join in the round, being careful not to twist.

Knit to M, BOR. (108 sts)

Knit until the hat measures 2"/5 cm from the CO edge.

Colorwork

Work the following 19 Rnds of the colorwork chart.


When the chart is finished, work even in MC until the piece measure 6"/15 cm from the cast on edge.

Crown Shaping

The shaping can be done with either a CDD, which leaves a ridge, or a P3tog, which leaves a depression. Use either where Dec is used.

Setup Rnd: K12, K2tog, (K25, K2tog) x 3, K to end; 104 sts rem.

Rnd 1: [K12, PM, Dec, K13] four times - 8 sts dec'd;  96 sts rem.

Rnd 2: Work even.

Rnd 3: Work even to 1 st bef M, [Dec, work even to 1 st bef M] four times - 8 sts dec'd; 88 sts rem.

Rnd 4: Work even.

Rep Rnds 3-4 five more times - 48sts rem.

Rep Rnd 3 five more times - 8 sts rem.

Break the yarn leaving a 12"/30.5 cm tail. With a tapestry needle, thread the tail through the remaining stitches. Pull end closing the hole and secure the tail inside the hat.

Edging 

With smaller DPNs and CC1, CO 3 sts.

Rnd 1: PUK 1 sts at the base of the hat, slide the sts to the right end of the needle, K2, SSK.

Repeat Rnd 1 until you have knit an applied i-cord around the bottom edge of the hat starting and ending at the center back.

Cords

Make 2.

With smaller DPNs and CC1, CO 5 sts.

Rnd 1: Slide the stitches back to the right side of the needle, knit across.

Repeat Rnd 1 until the i-cord is approx. 9"/23 cm long.

Bind off and cut the yarn leaving a long tail.

With the tail end of the yarn sew the i-cords to the center of the bottom of each earflap.

Weave the ends into the i-cords.

Tie a knot about 1"/2.5 cm from the bottom of the cord 

Finishing

Weave in the ends.
