Skills Required/Techniques Used

Knit & purl, cast-on, working in the round, & decreasing.

Yarn

CYC #1 Super Fine.

Sample shown knit in: Knit Picks Stroll (75% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon), 232 yds/214 m, 1.75 oz/50 g, 2 skeins in Navy 

The sample used 65g.

Needles

US 2.5/3 mm - one 16"/40 cm circular needle, and DPNs.

Or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions

Stitch markers (M); tapestry needle.

Gauge

42 sts and 44 rnds = 4"/10 cm square in 1x1 Rib unstretched using US 2.5/3 mm needles worked in the round.

Sizes

Large.

Finished Measurements

Hat circumference, unstretched: 16.75"/42.5 cm

To fit head circumference: 20-23"/51-58 cm

Hat circumference should be approximately 25-35% smaller than your actual head circumference.

Stitches

CDD - Central Double Decrease: Slip next two stitches together as if to knit, knit the next stitch, pass the two slipped stitches over the knit stitch.

Notes

This hat is knit inside out. This creates nice smooth decreases instead of the ridge created on the right side of a CDD.

DIRECTIONS

Using Alternating Long Tail cast-on, CO 176 sts and join in the round, being careful not to twist.

Rnd 1: [K1, P1] around.

Work even until the piece measures 9.5"/24 cm cm from the CO edge, or 3"/7.5 cm less than desired length.

Crown Shaping

Rnd 1: [Work even 21 sts, PM, CDD, work even 20 sts] four times - 8 sts dec'd; 168 sts rem.

Rnd 2: Work even.

Rnd 3: Work even to 1 st bef M, [CDD, work even to 1 st bef M] four times - 8 sts dec'd; 160 sts rem.

Rep Rnds 2-3 nine more times - 72 sts dec'd; 88 sts rem.

Rep Rnd 3 ten more times - 80 sts dec'd; 8 sts rem.

Finishing

Break the yarn leaving a 12"/30.5 cm tail. With a tapestry needle, thread the tail through the remaining stitches. Pull end closing the hole and secure the tail outside the hat.

Weave in ends on the outside of the hat. Turn the hat inside out.

Classic Striped Socks Pattern

 Classic Striped Socks Pattern These socks were inspired by classic men's striped socks. The ones you find in your grandmother's knitting pamphlets. I wanted to knit something that felt timeless and would last. I used a heavier fingering weight (4 ply) wool and knit it densely to aid in the life of the sock. I have all of my grandmother's knitting supplies from when the family lived in Alaska and she would knit my father and his siblings mittens, hats and socks, and they bring me constant inspiration.
