Skills Required/Techniques Used

Knit & purl, cast-on, simple cabling, kitchener stitch/grafting, & working in the round.

Yarn

CYC #1 Super Fine.

Sock shown knit in:

Knit Picks Capretta Superwash (80% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon), 230 yards/210 m, 1.76 oz/50 g: Sagebrush, 2 skeins.

Needles

US 1.5/2.5 mm needles for working small circumference in the round: DPNs, 2 circulars or 1 long circular. 

Or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions

Stitch markers (M); stitch holder; cable needle; tapestry needle.

Gauge

32 sts and 44 rnds = 4 in/10 cm square in stockinette stitch using US 1.5/2.5 mm needles worked in the round.

Finished Measurements

Sock circumference, not stretched: 7.5" (8.25", 9") [19, 21, 23 cm].

Sock circumference should be approximately 10% smaller than your actual foot/ankle circumference.

Leg length: Adjustable to fit.

Foot length: Adjustable to fit, finished length should be about ½"/1.3 cm shorter than actual foot length.

The sock shown measures 8.25"/21 cm sock circumference, and 9.25"/23.5 cm foot length.

Stitches

Cable Pattern

Rnds 1-2: [K2, P1, K2, P1] repeat around.

Rnd 3: [C1L, P1, K2, P1] repeat around.

Rnd 4: [K2, P1, K2, P1] repeat around.

C1L

Slip 1 stitch to the cable needle and hold in front, knit next stitch, knit stitch from cable needle.

C1R

Slip 1 stitch to the cable needle and hold in back, knit next stitch, knit stitch from cable needle

Notes

If you would like to make a mirrored pair of socks work a C1R in place of the C1L on the second sock.

Directions

Cuff

Using US Size 1.5/2.5 mm needles and MC, CO 60 (66, 72) sts using a long-tail, tubular or preferred cast on. Distribute across needles as you prefer and join work in the round, being careful not to twist. Place marker or note start of round.

Work *K1, P1* ribbing until the piece measures 1"/2.5 cm from CO.

Leg

Rnds 1-2: [K2, P1, K2, P1] repeat around.

Rnd 3: [C1L, P1, K2, P1] repeat around.

Rnd 4: [K2, P1, K2, P1] repeat around.

Work rounds 1-4, repeating 10 (11, 12) times around, until the piece measures 6"/15 cm from CO, or desired length to top of heel.

Heel

Heel Flap

The heel flap is worked back and forth across 32 (32, 38) sts.

Setup Row: K2, place the next 28 (34, 34) sts onto a spare needle or holder to work later for instep, turn.

Row 1 [WS]: Sl1, Purl across, turn.

Row 2 [RS]: Sl1, Knit across, turn.

Repeat rows 1-2 for a total of 21 (25, 29) rows, ending with a row 1.

Turn Heel

Work short-rows as follows.

Row 1 [RS]: SL1, K18 (18, 22), SSK, K1.

Row 2 [WS]: SL1, P7 (7, 9), P2tog, P1.

Row 3 [RS]: SL1, K to 1 stitch before gap, SSK, K1.

Row 4 [WS]: SL1, P to 1 stitch before gap, P2tog, P1.

Repeat rows 3-4 until all heel stitches have been worked, ending with a WS row — 20 (20, 24) sts rem.

Gusset

Take instep stitches off hold.

Setup Rnd: Sl1, K19 (19, 23) heel sts, then pick up and knit 13 (15, 17) sts along selvedge edge of the heel flap, PM, work in pattern as set across 28 (34, 34) instep sts, PM, pick up and knit 13 (15, 17) sts along selvedge edge of the heel flap, K10 (10, 12) sts from heel, PM for BOR. — 74 (84, 92) sts total.

Round begins at the center of the heel.

The 28 (34, 34) instep sts will be worked in the Cable pattern as set; the gusset and sole sts will be worked in St st (knit every rnd).

Rnd 1: K10 (10, 12), K10tbl (12, 14), K2tog, K1tbl, SM, work instep sts in patt as set, SM, K1tbl, SSK, K10tbl (12, 14), knit to end — 2 sts dec'd.

Rnd 2: Work rnd even, maintaining patt on instep.

Rnd 3: K to 3 sts before instep, K2tog, K1, SM, work instep sts in patt as set, SM, K1, SSK, knit to end — 2 sts dec'd.

Rnd 4: Work rnd even, maintaining patt on instep.

Repeat Rnds 3-4 a total of 6 (8, 9) times, for a total of 14 (18, 20) rows — 60 (66, 72) sts rem.

Foot

Work as set in pattern across instep and St st across sole until piece measures 1.75" (2", 2.25") [4.75, 5, 5.5 cm] less than the desired foot length, ending with a rnd 4 of the Cable pattern.

Toe

Rearrange stitches so that there are 30 (33, 36) sts on both the instep and sole.

Rnd 1: Knit. 

Rnd 2: Knit to 3 sts before marker, K2tog, K1, SM, K1, SSK, knit to 3 sts before marker, K2tog, K1, SM, K1, SSK, knit to end — 4 sts dec'd.

Repeat rnds 1-2 a total of 10 (11, 12) times, for a total of 20 (22, 24) rows — 20 (22, 24) sts rem.

Knit across to marker, break yarn leaving a 12" (30 cm) tail.

Kitchener remaining stitches.

Note: When doing the Kitchener stitch don't do the first two setup stitches. Then, when you have one st rem on each needle, slip the st on the front needle off and then slip the st on the back needle off without working them.

Finishing

Weave in the loose ends. Block if desired.
