Garden Boot Socks Pattern


Skills Required/Techniques Used

Knit & purl, cast-on, short-rows, kitchener stitch/grafting, & working in the round.

Yarn

CYC #1 Super Fine.

Sock shown knit in: 

Patons Kroy Socks (75% Wool, 25% Nylon), 166 yds/152 m, 1.75 oz/50 g:

MC - Grey Marl; 2 skeins, 

C1 - Muslin; 1 skein.

Knit Picks Stroll Fingering Tonal (75% Merino Wool, 25% Nylon), 462 yds/422 m, 3.53 oz/100 g:

C2 - Blue Yonder, 1 Skein. *Only 0.35 oz/10 g used.

Needles

US 1.5/2.5 mm needles for working small circumference in the round: DPNs, 2 circulars or 1 long circular. 

Or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions

Stitch markers (M); stitch holder; tapestry needle.

Gauge

30.5 sts and 40 rnds = 4 in/10 cm square in stockinette stitch using US 1.5/2.5 mm needles worked in the round.

Finished Measurements

Sock circumference, not stretched: 7.87"/20 cm.

Sock circumference should be approximately 10% smaller than your actual foot/ankle circumference.

Leg length: Adjustable to fit.

Foot length: Adjustable to fit. Finished length should be about ½"/1.3 cm shorter than actual foot length.

The sock shown measures 8"/20.32 cm sock circumference, and 8.8"/22.35 cm foot length.

Stitches

DS, "Double Stitch"

With yarn in front slip 1 st purlwise, bring yarn over the needle pulling the slipped stitch tight so that the legs of the previous stitch are on the needle, creating what looks two stitches on the needle, knit/purl the next stitch normally.

Directions

Cuff

Using US Size 1.5/2.5 mm needles and C1, CO 60 sts using a long-tail or preferred cast on. Distribute across needles as you prefer and join work in the round, being careful not to twist. Place marker or note start of round.

Rnds 1-5: In C1, [K2, P2] repeat around.

Rnd 6: In C2, Knit around.

Rnd 7: Sl1, K1, P2, [K2, P2] repeat around.

Rnd 8: [K2, P2] repeat around.

Break C2.

Rnd 9: In C1, Knit around.

Rnd 10: Sl1, K1, P2, [K2, P2] rep to end.

Rnds 11-14: [K2, P2] rep to end.

Break C1.

Leg

Rnd 1: In MC, Knit around.

Rnd 2: Sl1, Knit around.

Rnd 3: Knit around.

Knit around, until the piece measures 7"/15 cm from CO, or desired length to top of heel

Heel

Setup Rnds 1-3: In C1, Knit around.

Decrease Rows

Row 1 (WS): Place first 30 sts on hold. With C2, K10, PM, K10, PM, K10, turn.

Row 2 (WS): DS, Purl across, turn.

Row 3 (RS): DS, Knit to DS from previous row, turn.

Row 4 (WS): DS, Purl to DS from previous row, turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 eight more times, 20 rows total, ending with a WS row.

Center Rows

Row 1 (RS): DS, knit across all heel stitches working DS as K2Tog as you come to them, wrap & turn next instep st.

Row 2 (WS): Purl across all heel sts working DS as P2tog as you come to them, wrap and turn next instep st.

Increase Rows

Row 1 (RS): K20, SM, K1, turn.

Row 2 (WS): DS, K10, SM, P1, turn.

Row 3 (RS): DS, Knit to previous DS, work DS, K1, turn.

Row 4 (WS): DS, Purl to previous DS, work DS, P1, turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all outer sts have been worked.

End Row: DS, knit across heel sts removing markers.

Foot

Break C2.

Pick-up C1 at BOR and begin working in the round:

Rnd 1: Conceal 1st wrapped stitch, knit across instep to wrapped st, conceal 2nd wrapped st, work DS as K2tog, Knit to end.

Rnds 2-3: In C1, Knit around.

Break C1.

In MC, Knit until piece measures 1.8"/4.57 cm less than the desired foot length.

Toe

Break MC.

Rnd 1: In, C1 Knit around.

Rnd 2: K1, SSK, K to last 3 sts of instep, K2tog, K2, SSK, K to last 3 sts of sole, K2tog, K1.

Repeat Rnds 1-2 eight more times, for a total of 18 rows. (24 sts rem)

Kitchener remaining sts. 

Note: When doing the Kitchener stitch don't do the first two setup stitches. Then, when you have one st rem on each needle, slip the st on the front needle off and then slip the st on the back needle off without working them.

Finishing

Weave in the loose ends. Block if desired
